Year 5 BS

Welcome to Y5BS!

Autumn 1

Rivers of the UK and Beyond

In Year 5 this term, we have been learning all about rivers of the UK and beyond. In geography, we looked at the main features of a river and the journey of a river from source to mouth. We looked at a number of different rivers in the world and even wrote our own non-chronological reports about our favourite ones. We now know loads of facts about the Ganges, the Nile, the Amazon and of course the River Tyne! Did you know that the River Tyne was an important part of Geordie history? Not only has it been around since before the Roman times, it was also essential for the transportation of coal to London and other cities in the 19th and early 20th century. It was also used for ship building.

Autumn 2

How did Britain change during the Tudor reign?

We are learning all about the Tudors, but not just about Henry VIII and his six wives! We will be learning all about the battle of Bosworth and the start of the Tudor reign and the interesting history of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I. Mary was famous for her religious persecution of Protestants to restore Catholicism in England when on the throne (how she gained the reputation of “Bloody Mary”) and how this changed her popularity across England from high to low. We will also learn about how her marriage to Prince Phillip of Spain influenced this. Finally, we will study how the Tudor dynasty ended with the Elizabethan era, a period so significant in history it is called England’s golden Age.

Reading in Year 5

We love reading in Year 5. Have a look at how reading is encouraged in our classroom and the great books you can read at home.

Homework Example - Uploaded onto Seesaw every Friday.

The Anti-Bullying week theme was "Make A Noise About Bullying" this year. We started the week with 'Odd Socks Day' to celebrate our originality and ended the week with a fabulous workshop from Mr Burns.
